What Is a Scoliosis – And How Can Chiropractic Help?

Scoliosis is a condition that affects the spine, causing it to curve sideways, often in an “S” or “C” shape. While some people may have only a mild curve and few symptoms, others may experience pain, stiffness, or visible postural changes. If left unaddressed, scoliosis can progress over time and impact quality of life—especially during key growth phases.

What Is a Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine of 10 degrees or more, often accompanied by rotation of the vertebrae. It can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents during growth spurts.

Types of scoliosis include:

  • Idiopathic scoliosis – the most common type, with no known cause (usually develops in adolescence)
  • Congenital scoliosis – caused by a spinal malformation present at birth
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis – associated with conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
  • Degenerative scoliosis – occurs in adults due to spinal wear-and-tear or arthritis

Common Signs of Scoliosis

  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • A visible curve or lean in the spine
  • One shoulder blade more prominent than the other
  • Clothing that hangs unevenly
  • Back pain, muscle tension, or fatigue from uneven posture

How Can Chiropractic Help with Scoliosis?

Chiropractors are trained to assess spinal alignment, mobility, and muscle imbalances. While chiropractic care does not “cure” scoliosis, it can be highly beneficial in managing symptoms, improving function, and helping to slow progression—especially when started early.

At Your Chiro, scoliosis care may include:

Gentle Spinal Adjustments
Improving joint mobility in the spine and reducing compensatory strain in surrounding areas.

Postural Correction and Education
Helping patients understand how to sit, stand, and move in ways that support their spine and reduce pressure.

Specific Exercises
Tailored rehab programs to strengthen weak muscles, stretch tight areas, and support spinal alignment.

Monitoring Progress
We use regular assessments, posture scans, and functional tests to track changes over time.

Referral When Needed
If a scoliosis is severe or worsening, we’ll refer you for imaging or to a specialist to ensure comprehensive care.

What About Adults with Scoliosis?

Even if scoliosis was never treated in childhood, adults can still benefit from chiropractic care. In adults, scoliosis is often accompanied by pain, stiffness, or degenerative changes—and chiropractic treatment can help reduce discomfort and maintain mobility.

Don’t Wait Until It Gets Worse

Early detection and treatment are key—especially in growing children. If you’ve noticed signs of scoliosis or have been diagnosed and want to explore non-invasive management options, chiropractic care may help reduce symptoms and support a healthier spine.
