What Is a Deviated Septum – And Can Chiropractic Help?

What Is a Deviated Septum?

A deviated septum is a condition where the thin wall (called the nasal septum) that separates your left and right nasal passages is shifted off-center. In some cases, this misalignment is barely noticeable—but in others, it can lead to chronic nasal congestion, breathing difficulties, sinus problems, and more.

While surgery is often recommended in severe cases, many people are looking for non-surgical, drug-free options. That’s where advanced chiropractic techniques like Cranial Facial Release (CFR) and chiropractic nose adjustments come in.

What Is a Deviated Septum?

The nasal septum is made of bone and cartilage, ideally sitting in the center of your nose. A deviated septum occurs when this wall leans too far to one side, making one nasal passage smaller than the other.

Common causes include:

  • Congenital (present at birth)
  • Trauma or injury to the nose (e.g. from sports, falls, or accidents)
  • Repeated inflammation or infection of the nasal tissues

Symptoms of a Deviated Septum

People with a deviated septum may experience:

  • Blocked nasal passages (especially on one side)
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Loss of smell in chronic cases

How Chiropractic Can Help: Cranial Facial Release (CFR)

Cranial Facial Release (CFR) is a specialised chiropractic technique that focuses on the alignment and movement of the cranial bones and facial structures, including the nose.

In CFR, small, controlled balloon inflation is applied inside the nasal passage to help mobilise the bones of the skull and nasal cavity.

This technique may:

 ✅ Improve nasal airflow
✅ Reduce sinus pressure and congestion
✅ Help correct structural imbalances like deviated septum
✅ Enhance oxygen intake and breathing capacity
✅ Support the function of the central nervous system

Many people report dramatic improvements in breathing, sleep, and sinus health after a series of CFR sessions.

Chiropractic Nose Adjustments

In some cases, a gentle manual nose adjustment may be used to realign nasal bones that are contributing to the deviation or affecting facial symmetry. These are precise and controlled movements, often used in conjunction with CFR for best results.

Is Chiropractic a Replacement for Surgery?

Not always. In severe cases, surgical correction (septoplasty) may still be needed. However, many people with mild to moderate deviation or those looking to avoid surgery find chiropractic-based care a valuable first step in improving their symptoms and overall function.

Who Is CFR For?

  • People with a deviated septum
  • Chronic sinus sufferers
  • Mouth breathers or snorers
  • Post-nasal trauma or surgery patients
  • Athletes looking to improve oxygen intake
  • Individuals with facial or nasal asymmetry
